How Paperly works
Last updated: August 2026
Every tool on Paperly follows the same flow. This page explains that flow, what happens at each step, and why your files stay private.
The standard workflow
- Upload — you choose a file (or files). The bytes are read into browser memory.
- Configure — you set the options you need. Basic options are shown first; advanced options expand on demand.
- Process — a PDF engine runs in your browser and produces a result.
- Validate — the tool checks the output (page count, file type, validity) before showing a success state.
- Download — the result is delivered to your device. No copy is stored anywhere.
Why it is fast and private
Because processing happens on your device, there is no upload step, no queue and no server round-trip for your document. Your file never leaves your computer, phone or tablet.
Differences between tools
Tools differ in which files they accept and which options they expose. For example, merge accepts multiple PDFs, PDF to JPG produces images, and OCR needs a scanned document. The principles — local processing, validation, download — are the same everywhere.
Validation before success
A tool only shows a success state after its output passes checks: the result exists, has the expected type, and matches the expected page count where that is knowable. If those checks fail, you see an error instead of a misleading “done”.
