About Paperly

Last updated: August 2026

Paperly is a free PDF toolkit with more than 100 tools that run entirely in your web browser. This page explains what the site does, who it is for and the principles behind it.

What Paperly does

Paperly covers the everyday PDF workflows people actually run into: converting to and from images and Office formats, merging and splitting, compressing, protecting with passwords, redacting sensitive content, extracting text, running OCR on scans, filling forms and analyzing documents.

Every tool follows the same flow — upload, configure, process, download — so once you know one tool, you know them all.

Who it is for

Paperly is built for anyone who needs to get a PDF task done quickly without installing software or creating an account: students, freelancers, small teams, office workers and anyone who prefers to keep documents on their own device.

Product philosophy

  • Privacy by design — processing happens in your browser, so files never leave your device.
  • Simple by default — a clean basic mode, with advanced options available when a task needs them.
  • Honest tools — if a conversion or OCR has limitations, we say so, and we never claim a result is perfect.
  • Quality over quantity — every tool must work, be testable and have a real purpose.

How we keep quality high

Each tool has automated unit tests for its PDF engine and end-to-end tests that exercise the real upload-process-download flow in a browser, including mobile viewports and accessibility checks. Regressions are caught before they reach the site, and every tool is verified by hand before it is listed.

Who is behind Paperly

Paperly is built and maintained by a small independent team — currently effectively a solo developer. There is no venture funding, no advertising network and no data business behind it. The product is sustained by its users simply using it, and development priorities come from real usage and the messages received through the contact page.

That also means some things move slower than they would at a large company. When a limitation exists — in a conversion, in OCR quality, in a specific PDF feature — it is documented on the tool page instead of being hidden.

A note on privacy claims

We say “your files stay on your device” because the implementation makes it true: the processing engines run in your browser and no upload endpoint exists. We do not promise more than that, and we will not invent guarantees we cannot verify.
