File privacy & data handling
Last updated: August 2026
This page explains, step by step, exactly what happens to a file you process on Paperly. Everything here matches the actual implementation.
1. Where files are processed
In your browser. When you select a file, its bytes are read by JavaScript running in the current tab. No network request carries the file, and no server receives it.
2. Do files leave the browser?
No. File contents are never transmitted over the network. The only data that could leave your browser is anonymous analytics events describing which tools were used — never file contents or names.
3. Are files stored anywhere?
No. Files are held in memory while you work and are discarded when the tab closes or the page reloads. Nothing is written to a database, and no copy is kept by us.
4. When are files deleted?
There is nothing to delete. Because no copy exists outside your browser, closing the tab is all that is needed. The downloaded result file on your device is yours to keep or remove.
5. Do third-party services receive files?
No third-party service receives your files. The site may load fonts, styles and code from its own hosting; none of those receive document data.
6. What if processing fails?
If a tool cannot process a file, it shows an error and the file is simply discarded — it is not sent anywhere for diagnosis. You can try again with the same or a different file.
7. What you should avoid uploading
Even though files stay on your device, you should only process documents you are allowed to process. Do not type passwords or personal data into text fields you do not recognize, and avoid sharing device screen with sensitive content if you do not want it seen.
